Humanities

Welcome to the Humanities section of the School Curriculum.  Below you will find links to "At a glance" guides to what is being taught in the subjects Geography, History, MFL and Religious Education.  And a flavour of the sorts of learning experiences the children enjoy to build on and improve knowledge and skills.

Geography - our students  take part in activities and find out information about our local area as well as some investigative learning on why Jungles are wet and deserts are dry.  They look at maps from all over the world and identify countries, continents and oceans.  There is also additional information and facts on climate change and the impact which the Corona-virus has had on it.  To find out more about Geography here at Brompton-Westbrook look at our useful curriculum overview.

Adaptations will often need to be made to meet children's needs.  Please click here to see our Adaptive plan for the teaching of geography.

History - during history lessons children learn about a variety of periods throughout time.  Year 2 have enjoyed learning about the Great Fire of London this term and in the summer year 6 will complete an indepth study of World War II.  To find out more about the huge variety of eras that the children find out about, look at our useful curriculum overview.

Religous Education (RE) - here at Brompton-Westbrook we find out about the customs and celebrations of the major world religions.  To find out more about the work we do in RE look at our useful curriculum overview.

Modern foreign languages (MFL) -  Bonjour!  We have changed our MFL curriculum and now teach 1 language - French - so children make substantial progress and increase fluency.  A 3 year rolling programme has been put inplace to increase confidence and language skills.  We are currently on year 1.  At home it is worth looking at Duolingo app which is free and is valuable for consolidating the children’s understanding of the French language.  To find out more about the teaching of French look at our useful curriculum overview.

Adaptations are often needed to meet children's needs whilst they are learning a new language - in some cases at this school their 3rd or 4th.  Please click here to see our Adaptive plan for the teaching of MFL.
